Historical Toile Curtains

Toile curtains and a toile room decor is a design that has a timeliness, leaving it stylish for decades. Common places for toile curtains are in a bedroom, living room, or dining room because they give off a soft, elegant and romantic look. Toile curtains usually hang down in loose pleats, divided in the middle and drawn back with matching tie backs. Some have a lace, toile patterned topper.

Toile curtains are made of a light and smokey colored cotton fabric, with a scenic or floral pattern printed on it. Most toile designs are influenced by country French design. Toile design originated in France and most toile is now classified under the original “toile de jouy” design. These designs have scenes of rural life, classical design motifs, historical events, birds and floral patterns. Hawaiian influenced patterns have become popular as well. The pattern on toile curtains is most commonly printed in smokey blue, red or black on a creamy, white background.
