Use Valances for Quick Window Treatments
Curtains or draperies are commonly accompanied by valances. They are used as decorative toppers that are an exact match to the curtain fabric or match with some other solid or sheer color. Valances are used to enhance the lines of a window with an odd shape, such as curves or arches. When decorating windows with blinds or simple curtains, try using valences with ruffles or lace as a decorative accent. Other styles of valences include scarf valences which drape loosely across the top. Pleated and straight hanging valences are the most common.
Valances usually cover the top of a window seal and the first few inches of the window. A new trend has been introduced using valances as the only window treatment. This design serves no purpose for covering a window, but if you are not concerned with privacy, it can be a nice and easy decoration for windows. Valances used purely for decoration are hung with decorative hardware as well. The hardware for valances usually includes all brackets and nails needed to hang a thin rod with fancy finials.
